For those of you who follow the photos and antics of our Jack Russells, we have some sad news. Buffy, aka the World's Best Dog aka the Worst Bad Dog, has passed on. It was unexpected, primarily because one does not expect a truck to come speeding down a country road at a quarter to one in the morning, when Buffy was hot on the trail of, well, probably nothing, but hot on the trail nonetheless. We miss her deeply. The newest member of the pack is Spike. The rest of the crew is unchanged: Scooter, the geriatric JRT, is now (Spring 2011) almost 17 years old; Maggie, whom only a mother can love; and Fergus, who calls himself the COTU (center of the universe). Fergus is the ridiculously cute puppy (in 2008) who fooled us by growing into a JRT whose ears will not flop. Spike, now almost a year old, has most certainly not followed in Fergus's tracks, at least with respect to ear flopping. He has also been in puppy school for some time now and is the best behaved Jack Russell we've had in more than 25 years.

Our introduction to Maine Coons came when one was abandoned at our barn. He's a polydactyl, and for some reason e named him Thistle. He spent his first few months as a barn cat, but somehow found that beneath him and insisted he be brought home. He's been here for two years now, pretty much rules the roost and is singlehandedly contributing to the "survival-of-the-fittest" theory when it comes to the local bird population. A second Maine Coon found his way into our household when our daughter's former high school teacher took a job overseas and couldn't bring Tobias with him. Tobias, pictured here, was with us for a year until he succumbed to what we've learned is a common cat problem, kidney failure. He was a bit standoffish, but he was much loved and much missed.

Spike and Teddy are the newest additions to the Advanced Saddle Fit menagerie. Spike is a 5-month-old Jack Russell, half brother to the Center of the Universe, Fergus. As long as the other dogs aren't listening, we tell him that he's the cutest Jack Russell yet. Teddy is a pound rescue, also about 5 months old. A more entertaining kitten would be hard to find. This guy thinks the world revolves around him, and, as often as not, it does. He plays equally fiercely with us humans, with the other Jack Russells (except Scooter, who can't really be bothered), and Thistle, the Maine Coon. Teddy has his own gallery, though there are just a few photos there now.

Photos of Teddy are also in the Spike and Teddy album. Teddy is a pound rescue. Actually, there was something of a humane society competition. I looked at kittens in one humane society, spouse in the other, each convinced that his/her kittens were cutest. Colleen won. Teddy is a laugh-a-minute. If anyone has an idea what breed he is, please let us know. We think he's just a mutt cat, but if he resembles a particular breed, it might be interesting to know.
